Grading the 'BH90210' reboot stars on their career hits and misses

August 2024 · 7 minute read

The Peach Pit is probably a WeWork now.

It’s been almost 30 years since the original cast of “Beverly Hills, 90210” first walked the halls of West Beverly Hills High and dazzled our screens with their designer wardrobes, luxury cars and even ... cellphones!

Now, the gang is back with a six-episode “limited series” dubbed “BH90210,” premiering at 9 p.m. Wednesday on Fox. The reportedly meta show will feature the “real” actors filming a reboot of the famed Gen-X soap. And since pop culture has long been obsessed with the ’90s, it only makes sense that the ultimate ’90s show, which ran from 1990-2000, finally gets its due with the reboot.

Besides the clothes (which you can go into any Urban Outfitters and buy right now) and other material aspects of the show, the characters in the teen sensation had adult attitudes, too. The actors, who were, of course, already adults, discussed issues like rape, drugs and even self-checking for breast cancer — topics usually reserved for movies and adult programming. This kind of writing paved the way for a slew of teen dramas that followed, such as “Dawson’s Creek” and “Gossip Girl.”

The entire core original cast is back, save for Luke Perry, who died in March. As Beverly Hills’ resident heartthrob, Dylan McKay, Perry played the bad boy and love interest of … well … everybody.

At the time of his death, Perry was starring in the popular CW teen drama “Riverdale,” a show that also wouldn’t exist without predecessors like “90210.” And although Perry wasn’t locked into the reboot yet, his passing is what inspired Shannen Doherty to return to the ZIP code, with plans to memorialize Perry through the show.

In honor of the return of our favorite high-school gang, here’s a report card for what the cast members have been up to since their last class.

Shannen Doherty | 48

Graduate work: After leaving the original “90210” (err ... being told to leave) in 1994 following four seasons as Brenda Walsh, she quickly went on to star in the cult-favorite movie “Mallrats” (1995). Doherty then returned to TV as Prue in another cult-favorite, the WB’s “Charmed” (1998), starring alongside Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan for three seasons. Her career had nose-dived by the time she battled blood-thirsty fish in the made-for-TV movie “Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys” (2014).

Extracurriculars: In 2015, Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer. As part of her brave battle, she underwent a mastectomy and chemo and radiation treatments. She’s now in remission.

Final grade: A

Beating cancer in real life and forgiving Kelly for stealing her TV boyfriend (and for the cast getting her fired) is impressive. Here’s hoping Doherty’s new Brenda is as dark and full of drama as her first turn as an original teen mean girl.

Jennie Garth | 47

Graduate work: After playing popular, blond, boyfriend-stealing Kelly Taylor on “90210,” Garth carved out a nice made-for-TV-movie niche, including the forgettable Hallmark Channel Western “The Last Cowboy” (2003), which co-starred Bradley Cooper. She also starred on a couple TV series: She played Amanda Bynes’ older sister on “What I Like About You” (2002), and teamed up with former “90210” colleague Tori Spelling in “Mystery Girls” (2014), which was canceled after one season.

Extracurriculars: Garth’s very public marriage to actor Peter Facinelli imploded and became a very public divorce when rumors of his infidelity surfaced during his “Twilight” fame.

Final grade: C

Garth has a great thing going with her TV-movie career, so if this reboot doesn’t work out, we hear Lifetime Movies is looking for a new darling.

Ian Ziering | 55

Graduate work: After playing resident bro Steve Sanders, Ziering had a number of one-off TV guest spots, including a role as a Navy captain on the TV series “JAG” in 2001. But the best was yet to come: Who could have predicted that Syfy’s deliciously campy “Sharknado” (2013) would have been so successful — or garner five sequels? On the other hand: Was “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming” really necessary?

Extracurriculars: Ziering made it to the semifinals on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in 2007, despite dancing companion Cheryl Burke, in 2016, calling Ziering her “least favorite” partner. He also guest starred as a Chippendales dancer in 2013.

Final grade: B

Ziering’s “Sharknado” success shows that in Hollywood, it doesn’t matter if they’re laughing with you or at you — the money is the same.

Brian Austin Green | 46

Graduate work: Green had a spate of television acting roles in the aughts following his turn as West Beverly nerd David Silver, including guest spots on “Las Vegas,” “CSI” and the 2002 revival of “The Twilight Zone.” He co-starred with another ’90s heartthrob, Freddie Prinze Jr., in the should-have-had-a-second-season ABC show “Freddie.” He also had a fun run playing Keith Watson on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” in 2011. Despite a string of TV guest spots on top-rated network-television programs, Green still found the time to star in the direct-to-DVD horror flick “Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2” in 2011.

Extracurriculars: Green married 2000s movie star Megan Fox in 2010 in a high-profile wedding in Hawaii. She famously filed for divorce (and spousal support) in 2015 before the couple reconciled. Along with their three sons, Green also has one with his former “90210” co-star Vanessa Marcil.

Final grade: C

Green has been working on another reboot (“Magnum P.I.”), so his acting career could see a boost post-“BH90210.”

Gabrielle Carteris | 58

Graduate work: Carteris’ role as the brainy, Brandon-obsessed Andrea Zuckerman, was hard to live down, so she lent her voice to cartoons and video games for a few years. Like the rest of the crew, Carteris has worked on numerous TV guest spots on shows like “Nip/Tuck,” “NYPD Blue” and “Crossing Jordan.” In 2008, she played Principal Tuckerman for 14 episodes on a short-lived web series called “My Alibi.”

Extracurriculars: Carteris put her role as editor in chief of the West Beverly school newspaper to good use in her professional life: She’s been president of SAG-AFTRA (a union representing 160,000 Hollywood creatives, including many of her acting peers) since 2016.

Final grade: B

Andrea Zuckerman with a B? Blasphemy! Carteris has a busy few weeks ahead: Besides the reboot, the SAG-AFTRA election is in late-August.

Tori Spelling | 46

Graduate work: Producers always claimed that there was no nepotism involved in Spelling’s original casting (her father, of course, was the famous TV producer Aaron Spelling), but her acting career stalled after playing ditzy Donna. Cue the usual reality-TV train wreck: Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, managed to document their ups and downs over the course of a lengthy six-season run of numerous “Tori & Dean” iterations. After he admitted to infidelity, the duo took their show to Lifetime to document their struggles on the hard-to-watch 2014 series “True Tori.”

Extracurriculars: Tori’s had it rough on the homefront. She’s been publicly feuding with her mother, Candy, mostly over money, for more than a decade. (She and her brother reportedly got less than $1 million of Dad’s rumored $500 million estate after he died in 2006.)

Final grade: D

Donna Martin may have graduated, but she could have used a few more years in school. Hopefully, the new “BH90210” shows us more of Spelling’s smart side.

Jason Priestley | 49

Graduate work: After playing the handsome and wholesome Brandon Walsh for nine seasons, Priestley and his sideburns immediately acted in some TV movies and had a guest spot in a 2002 Britney Spears video. Still, he has spent most of his post-“90210” time directing, plus a run on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” on what was then known as ABC Family.

Extracurriculars: During his “90210” years, Priestley loved car racing, and in 2002, he crashed into a wall in a pre-race accident at the Kentucky Speedway and broke his feet, nose and spine. It took years to recover.

Final grade: C

Although he was one of the show’s mainstay heartthrobs, his Hollywood career never picked up after “90210.” However, after the reboot, perhaps millennials will start copying his sideburns.
